Joel Santos

Joel Santos (www.joelsantos.net / @joelsantosphoto) is a Travel Documentary Filmmaker/Producer, creator of the documentary TV series “Mundo à Vista” and “Portugal à Vista” for SIC  (https://sic.pt/, the leading TV channel in Portugal) and also OPTO SIC (the netflix-like streaming service from SIC).

“Mundo à Vista” has 5 seasons and “Portugal à Vista” has 2 seasons, with minimum 5 episodes each, documenting conflicted regions, volcanically active and remote regions like South Sudan, Niger, Ethiopia, Benin, Mongolia, Indonesia, China, Guatemala, Mexico, Iceland, Scotland, among others.

Joel Santos was awarded the Travel Photographer of The Year in 2016, the 1st (“Dream Places”) and 2nd (Nature and wildlife) place awards at the ART & Tour — International Tourism Film Festival (2019), and BES/VISAO 1st Place Nature (WPF JURY, 2005), among many other awards.

He is journalist/writer/photographer at VISAO (https://visao.sapo.pt/autores/joel-santos/), the leading news magazine in Portugal, creating not only travel articles but also providing the imagery (cover and inside) and content for the past 5 years special editions about AZORES and MADEIRA.

He’s the author of 10 books, 4 of them thematic (India, Portugal, The Amazon – Brazil, Portuguese Natural Parks) and 6 of them technical (Photography and Editing). His images and articles are internationally published in leading magazines and newspapers, namely Nat Geo, Nat Geo Travel, Geo, The Guardian, among others.

Joel Santos has a honors degree and a masters in Economics and has been a university teacher in East-Timor Dili Economics University (2004-2006), became editor in chief of the major photo magazine in Portugal (affiliated to Digital Camera, from Future Publishing, from 2007 until 2010), but has since then devoted his life to his biggest passion – original documentary and storytelling through imagery.
